Bees have appeared in art for thousands of years. From prehistoric rock paintings to contemporary installations, this small creature has taken many forms and meanings across cultures and artistic traditions.
Sometimes the bee is simply part of nature. In other moments it becomes a symbol - of labor, order, power, spirituality, beauty, or ecological balance. By looking at how artists represent bees, we can also see how human relationships with nature and society have changed over time.
Bee in Art is a project that follows these representations across art history.
Each month, the blog will explore one art period and present two artworks that show how bees were depicted and understood in that moment. Throughout the month, biweekly posts on social media will highlight each artwork individually.
The journey begins with Prehistoric and Early Rock Art, where humans first recorded their encounters with bees and honey.
